Praying with Refugees: hope for Haiti

Washington DC, July 1, 2011 — The earthquake that struck Haiti in January 2010 caused much heartache, pain, and death. But, also present among the rubble was hope. For every story of hope there seemed to be one of heartbreak; every act of courage and progress teetered on the edge of frustration and hopelessness.
The world responded with money and aid. Jesuit Refugee Service provided emergency assistance, and has attempted to go further.
Your Reflections
More than one year later, aid still arrives. Volunteers from around the world are still working. Jesuit Refugee Service is working both in the camps for displaced people in Port au Prince, and along the Haitian—Dominican Republic border. Education has become a primary focus of our work in Haiti.

Washington DC, 1er juillet 2011 – Le tremblement de terre qui a frappé Haïti en janvier 2010 a causé beaucoup de chagrin, de douleur et de mort. Mais au milieu des décombres, l'espoir aussi était présent. Pour chaque histoire d'espoir il semblait qu'il y en ait une de peine ; chaque acte de courage et de progrès vacillait au bord de la frustration et du désespoir.
Le monde a répondu avec de l'argent et de l'aide. Le Service Jésuite des Réfugiés a fourni de l'aide d'urgence, et a essayé d'aller au-delà.
Ta réflexion
Plus d'un an après, l'aide arrive encore. Des bénévoles du monde entier y travaillent encore. Le Service Jésuite des Réfugiés œuvre à la fois dans les camps pour personnes déplacées à Port-au-Prince et le long de la frontière Haïti - République Dominicaine. L'éducation est devenue un objectif primaire de notre travail à Haïti.
« Ce n'est que par l'accès universel à l'éducation pour tous les enfants d'Haïti, et à travers une campagne d'alphabétisation de masse pour adultes, que nous pouvons assurer qu'Haïti aura les outils dont elle a besoin pour se reconstruire plus forte. » Père Wismith Lazard SJ.

Washington DC, 1 de julio de 2011 – El terremoto que devastó Haití en enero de 2010 causó pesadumbre, dolor y muerte. Y a pesar de ello, entre esa devastación brotaba la esperanza. Tras cada historia de esperanza parecía haber otra de desazón; y cada acto de valentía, cada paso adelante parecía estar al borde de la frustración y la desesperanza.
El mundo respondió con dinero y ayuda. El Servicio Jesuita a Refugiados ofreció asistencia de emergencia y trató de ir aún más allá.
Tu reflexión
Más de un año después, la ayuda sigue llegando. Voluntarios de todo el mundo continúan trabajando. El Servicio Jesuita a Refugiados está presente tanto en los campamentos de desplazados en Port-au-Prince, como a lo largo de la frontera haitiano-dominicana. La educación se ha convertido en un enfoque central de nuestra labor en Haití.

Washington DC, 1 luglio 2011 – Il sisma che ha colpito Haiti nel gennaio 2010 ha causato immenso dolore, gravi sofferenze e ha richiesto un pesante tributo di vite umane. Pur tuttavia, in mezzo a tante macerie, non è venuta meno la speranza. Ogni storia di speranza ha avuto un contraltare di dolore, ogni atto di coraggio e progresso ha dovuto vedersela con situazioni di frustrazione e sfiducia.
Il mondo ha risposto con l'invio di denaro e varie forme di aiuto. Il Servizio dei gesuiti per i rifugiati si è fatto carico dell'assistenza di emergenza, cercando di ampliare la portata dell'intervento.

A distanza di oltre un anno, gli aiuti continuano ad arrivare. Volontari da tutto il mondo sono sempre ancora all'opera. Il Servizio dei gesuiti per i rifugiati lavora sia nei campi per sfollati di Port-au-Prince sia lungo il confine tra Haiti e la Repubblica Dominicana. Particolare impegno viene profuso a Haiti nell'opera educativa.
